The Workshop
Join Silvia’s creative mono-printing on clay workshop and design a large terracotta platter with a loop handle, using colourful decorative slips.
Participants will learn Silvia’s approach to slip mono-printing, layering colour and expressive mark-making to create bold, abstract designs.
There is plenty of encouragement to experiment and develop a personal style through colour, pattern, and composition.
The session also includes an introduction to slab rolling to help construct the platter form. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a unique terracotta piece, suitable for everyday use or as a decorative wall work.
Mono-printing with slips on clay is an expressive printmaking technique that creates bold, one-off designs directly on a ceramic surface. Coloured slip is made by mixing liquid clay with stains and oxides, then painted onto newspaper to build up vibrant, layered compositions.
While still wet, the design is transferred onto a clay slab using a printing roller, lifting the image from the paper and imprinting it onto the clay.
Each print can only be made once, making every result completely unique. The process encourages spontaneity, experimentation, and rich, painterly marks that bring energy and character to the surface.
These hands-on ceramics workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced makers who want to explore new techniques in a relaxed, supportive setting.
After the workshop, your platter will be dried, fired, and glazed in Silvia’s studio. It will be ready for collection within three weeks from the Atelier Beside the Sea.
The Artist
Silvia holds Master of Design in Ceramics and Visual Research from the University of Brighton and has been working in ceramics since 2005. She has been a professional designer and maker since 2012, creating work for retail, galleries, interior designers, and hospitality clients.
Her practice has been recognised with awards including the Elle Decoration Design Awards (2016) and New Designers One Year On (2013). In 2019, she received a grant from the Government of Kuwait and the World Crafts Council Europe to represent the UK at Kuwait Craft Week.
In 2023, she collaborated with Habitat and a Portuguese artisan factory on a ceramic homeware collection for Habitat’s 60th Anniversary Collection.
Silvia is a member of the Crafts Council and has also worked as a ceramic’s demonstrator at the University of Brighton for three years.
She has led numerous workshops across Sussex and in her own studio. Her teaching style is informal yet in-depth, creating a relaxed and supportive environment focused on hands-on making and creative exploration.
The Setting
This workshop takes place at Atelier Beside the Sea, an arts venue set within three of Brighton’s iconic King’s Road Arches between the Palace and West Piers. It offers a vibrant programme of art and craft designed to inspire both locals and visitors.
