Saturday 5 December
10:30am - 4pm
Atelier Beside the Sea
The Workshop
Make beautiful, folk art inspired stars from English rush. There will be time to make one large star (big enough to hang on your door as an alternative to a wreath, or as a wall decoration), plus a number of small stars (for tree decorations or gifts).
Rush is a traditional, native wild plant that's lovely to work with. There'll be sample stars showing lots of variations in style to inspire you.
All tools and materials provided, including different types of cord so you can customise your stars.
Suitable for anyone who loves making things with their hands. Designed for adults but 14–18-year-olds are very welcome if accompanied by a participating adult.
Tickets include lunch.
The Artist
Ruby Taylor’s practice is materials-led and concerned with origins and connection, and the immersive, sensory experience of making. She mainly works with foraged plants and wild clay, harvesting direct from the landscape in a sustainable and respectful way, to create functional and sculptural pieces.
She has been commissioned by Wakehurst Kew a number of times to create large scale works, including Hazel Holloway 2023 in Pearcelands Wood.
A trained educator and maker with over 30 years’ experience, Ruby regularly runs wild basketry and wild pottery courses as Native Hands in Sussex woodland. She is the author of the bestseller Wild Basketry, published in 2025 by Bloomsbury.
The Setting
This workshop takes place at Atelier Beside the Sea, an arts venue set within three of Brighton’s iconic King’s Road Arches between the Palace and West Piers. It offers a vibrant programme of art and craft designed to inspire both locals and visitors.
