Woodcut Printmaking with Helen Brown - 3 April
Saturday 3 April
10:30am - 4pm
Lewes Castle
The Workshop
Join Helen Brown for a fun and creative day of woodcut printmaking at Lewes Castle.
During this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of woodcut printmaking and create several different images and a collection of prints to take home.
We’ll explore a range of techniques, including:
Designing and carving an image into a soft woodblock
Printing with black ink
Using Chine Collé, a technique that adds a fine paper overlay to a print
Experimenting with coloured inks
Printing using both a press and by hand
Combining techniques to create different effects
The day will begin with a demonstration of the techniques we’ll be using. Helen will then guide you step by step through the process, helping you develop your own designs and explore the possibilities of woodcut printing.
There will be plenty of time to experiment with different ideas, colours and techniques. You’ll leave with a collection of unique prints that you’ve made yourself.
No previous printmaking experience is required. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience.
Please note that woodcut printmaking involves sharp cutting tools, which we’ll use carefully and safely throughout the day.
Come along, get creative and discover the joy of making your own prints in the wonderful setting of Lewes Castle.
All materials and lunch will be provided.
The Artist
Helen Brown is a Sussex-based woodcut printmaker and experienced workshop facilitator. Her work is inspired by the South Downs and the surrounding landscape, which she explores on foot, sketching outdoors before transferring her drawings onto wooden blocks to carve and print.
Helen creates her prints by hand, using traditional relief-printing techniques. She often combines layers of colour, Chine Collé and hand-tinting to capture the changing light, atmosphere and character of a place.
The Setting
This workshop takes place at Lewes Castle, a medieval castle in the heart of the town.
