Drawing with your Senses with Katie Sollohub - 3 October

£120.00

Saturday 3 October
10:30am - 4pm

TheWorkshop

As we move into Autumn spend a day by the sea, drawing with your whole body alive and awake to your surroundings. Guided by mindful meditation and some simple movement exercises to heighten your senses, you will be encouraged to draw with all your senses, often with your eyes shut!

Open instead your awareness to the sound of the ocean, the taste of salt on your lips, the smell of the sea air, the feel of the wind on your skin or a pebble in your hand. Draw with your eyes shut, without judgement, as you listen to and feel into the space around you.

We will take a walk on the beach to breathe it all in and explore, where possible making drawings outside, directly in response to the sensory experience. Back in the studio, we will explore how the memory of sensations stay with us, and experiment with making more drawings based on our experience of the world outside. Your drawings can remain quite abstract, or they might include aspects of the visual. Come without any expectations.

This will be an experimental and meditative workshop, suitable for all. You do not need any drawing experience, just a willingness to be curious and open to the process, to draw without judgement, and enjoy a sense of place.

We will be working with charcoal, graphite, coloured pencils, pastels and other basic drawing materials, in an A4 sketchbook. All materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own preferred materials and sketchbook if you have one.

Tickets include lunch.

The Artist

Katie looks at the world intensely, noticing everything making connections, finding narratives. Her work records the process of looking, crossing through time and space, drawing on memory and history.

In much of her work she tells stories, drawing out the spirit of a person, place or thing. Boundaries of time and space dissolve - a curtain blows in the open window, a door ajar, trees and clouds float into the room, objects appear to have been just put down by an absent hand.

There is a sense that something is about to happen. In other work she is marking time through ritual and routine, working in series about everyday things and activities, connecting her daily practice of meditation to the creative process.

Katie’s work has been selected for the Discerning Eye, Lynne Painter Stainers Prize, Royal Academy Summer show, Jerwood Drawing Prize. In 2020 she was awarded 1st prize in the Derwent Drawing Prize for The Blue Bedroom, selected for Wells Contemporary and Broadway Arts Exhibition, and Glyndebourne Festival Exhibition.

The Setting

This workshop takes place at Atelier Beside the Sea, an arts venue set within three of Brighton’s iconic King’s Road Arches between the Palace and West Piers. It offers a vibrant programme of art and craft designed to inspire both locals and visitors.
