Natural Dyeing for Beginners with Fiona Eastwood

Learn how to create and apply natural dyes using safe, sustainable methods across a range of fibres.

The Workshop

In this workshop you’ll learn how to prepare and apply natural dyes to wool, cotton, silk, and linen, how to create a dye bath, and how to use solar jars for smaller quantities of yarn and fibre. 

All methods used will be safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. This course is ideal for complete beginner in natural dyeing and those looking to deepen their knowledge of dye plants and natural dyeing techniques. 

Tickets include lunch and all materials.

About the Artist

Fiona is a weaver and dyer with a BA from Camberwell School of Art and a postgraduate teaching degree from the London Institute for Education. She helps manage the Dye Garden at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, finding deep reward in the process—from growing dye plants to dyeing yarns and using them in her textiles. 

Passionate about the unique qualities of plants and the colours they yield, Fiona aims to help others reconnect with nature through foraging and growing dye plants for creative projects. She has led natural dyeing workshops for the National Trust, the Forest School Association, and local artists and schools.

The Setting

This workshop takes place at Atelier Beside the Sea, an arts venue set within three of Brighton’s iconic King’s Road Arches between the Palace and West Piers. It offers a vibrant programme of art and craft designed to inspire both locals and visitors.

The Workshop

Friendly, interactive and packed with character, Tom’s workshops invite people to step away from screens, get hands-on and inky with historic presses and movable wood type, discovering the joy of making something real. Whether complete beginners or seasoned creatives, participants leave with new skills, great prints and inky fingers.

About the Artist
Tom Boulton is a letterpress printer, typographic artist and published author of Letterpress – a creative guide to printmaking, working from his workshop on the south coast of England. Through his studio Type Tom, he brings traditional printing roaring back to life with vintage presses, antique wood type, bold colour and plenty of ink-covered enthusiasm.

Having worked with leading names including Tate Modern, Fortnum & Mason, Southbank Centre, The Design Museum, and winner on a D&D award Tom now shares his passion through lively, hands-on workshops that get people printing from the very start. Expect ink, creativity and a healthy obsession with all things typography.

Exploring Botanical Inks with Fiona Eastwood

Discover the art and science of making inks from plants in this hands-on, experimental workshop with textile artist Fiona Eastwood.

The Workshop

Using a selection of plants alongside locally foraged materials, you’ll learn how to prepare and extract vibrant natural inks.

Throughout the day, you’ll experiment with colour modifiers that transform and extend your ink palette, unlocking subtle variations and surprising hues. You’ll also explore different mark-making techniques - practicing drawing and painting with brushes and tools crafted from natural materials.

Whether you’re new to natural dyes or have some experience, this workshop offers a relaxed and supportive environment to deepen your understanding of botanical inks, build practical skills and create your own unique artworks.
